Selective Ion Monitoring Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry

Selective Ion Monitoring Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (SIM GC/MS) is a molecular-analytical technique using special laboratory instruments including a gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer. In general, the gas chromatography is employed to break apart the complex chemical mixtures and into their individual components. Once the mixtures are separated, the unique chemicals can be identified and quantified by the mass spectrometer.

Polyhedron Laboratories SIM GC/MS prepares the sample to be tested by extracting the analytes of interest into a liquid solvent base. This material is then inserted into the GC where it is blown into a column with an inert gas - typically hydrogen or helium. The analytes within the compound are then dispersed within the column and each component of the mixture reacts at different rates as they move toward the mass spectrometer. At this point, they are saturated with electrons, which form ionized particles on the analyte. These ionized fragments can then be separated based on their mass-to-charge ratios. The charged particles then enter the mass detector where the finial analysis and measurements can be performed.  

Polyhedron Laboratories uses SIM GC/MS to detect specific analytes with enhanced sensitivities relative to the full-scan mode. From here, the MS collects data for the masses in question. Typically, only two to four ions are measured per compound as the ratios of are unique to the analyte of interest. The sensitivity of SIM GC/MS can be increased by a factor of 10 to 100 times that of Full-Scan GC/MS.
